How to Apply to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Program

The electronic application process is simple and convenient. Below you will find helpful links as well as the link to the electronic application.

To be admitted to graduate status, the basic requirement is a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution, with a major appropriate to the proposed graduate program. All students are required to take the GRE (the Biochemistry Subject Test is not required). International students whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

What are the minimum requirements for admission?
A minimum GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) and approximately 300 combined on the GRE  is required.

The priority deadline for PhD applicants who want to be considered for fellowship support is January 5 for the following Fall Quarter.

Is there financial aid available?

When we make an offer of admission for the PhD program, it is with a full financial package including a fellowship for the first year and salary for serving as a student researcher or TA in subsequent years. The package also includes student fees and health insurance.

Fellowship funding is not available for MS students. You may be eligible for financial aid, so be sure to complete the FAFSA and check in with the UCR Financial Aid Office.

 
Can I Use a credit card to pay the application fee?
Yes, this is the only method of payment accepted.
Can I pay the application fee after I find out if I am admissible?
In order to have your application reviewed it must be complete and the application fee is required.
Do I really need two copies of transcripts?
You need only send one official copy to the department.
If I have a low GRE or TOEFL or GPA can I be admitted provisionally?
Unfortunately, we do not have a provisional admission. You must meet the minimum requirements to be considered for admission.
Should I send only my transcript with my bachelors degree or transcripts from all of my undergraduate institutions?
You must send in transcripts of all college-level work completed or attempted after high school, even if all your units were successfully transferred. UCR undergrads: This applies to you too!
Who should the letters of reference be from?
At least two should be from academic sources, preferable all three. But if there is one person who would like to write one for you or you feel it is pertinent then by all means send it in. You may also have more than three letters.
Can I send all of my materials in one envelope?
Yes, by all means save postage! You may put them in one large envelope as long as all official documents are in sealed envelopes.

FAQ for International Students

What are the minimum requirements for admission?
A minimum GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) and pproximately 300 combined on the GRE  is required. . However, these are the minimum requirements and international admission is extremely competitive.
What are the English language requirements?

ALL applicants whose first language is not English and who have not earned an advanced degree at an institution where English is the exclusive language of instruction, must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This exam is administered by the Educational Testing Service and offered in nearly every country abroad. This exam must be taken within two years of the time you would begin the program at UCR. The minimum acceptable scores are: 550 for the the written exam; 213 for the computer-based exam, and 80 for the internet-based exam (iBT).

All admitted applicants whose first language is not English and are expected to be Teaching Assistants are required, upon arrival at UCR, to take the TOEFL Academic Speaking Test (SPEAK). The SPEAK Test evaluates English speaking proficiency at the intermediate to advanced levels. TAST is developed from the speaking section of the next generation TOEFL test. It presents test takers with integrated speaking tasks that simulate real academic situations.

How will I know my application status?
You can check the status of your application any time through the electronic application. Please keep your login and password information, as you will need these to access the system.
Can I pay my application fee by credit card?
Yes, this is the only method of payment accepted.

No financial aid is available for international MS applicants. MS students are self-funded.

Do I need to pick a faculty mentor prior to admission?
It is not necessary to choose a faculty mentor during the admission process. Within the first year of study, PhD students will participate in a lab rotation process. Please feel free to contact faculty whose research you are interested in.
What are the department codes for Biochemistry at UCR?
For the GRE the institution code for UCR is 4839 and the department code for Biochemistry 0202. For TOEFL you will only need the institution code.
